Somerville like the rest of the Mornington Peninsula is bursting at the seams with family friendly walks. We’ve done a quick review of our top 5 below:
1. Western Port Coastal Reserve (1 Yaringa Rd, Somerville)
From the heart of Somerville, with its cafes, bakeries and shops, this relatively urban trail travels along the service road beside Frankston-Flinders Rd until it crosses Deanswood Drive and becomes a dedicated path. Through the small town of Tyabb with its antiques precinct, the path continues alongside Frankston-Flinders Rd.
2. Hastings Foreshore Reserve (2 Marine Parade Hastings)
Take in wide views of the Western Port Bay on this picturesque walk along the Hastings Foreshore Reserve and into the mangroves. From the Hastings Pier follow the paved track northwards close to the waterfront past the restaurant. On your right will be mangroves and on your left the large grassy area of the reserve. Keep on the path to the right until you meet up with the boardwalk on the right hand side. The boardwalk is 400 metres long and takes you further northwards over Kings Creek to Jack Babington Park.
3. Balnarring Beach (Library Road, Balnarring Beach, Balnarring)
Balnarring Beach, also known as Tulum Beach, features sweeping crescents of coastline and a foreshore reserve which offers safe swimming along sandy stretches of the coast. Holding the award for the ‘Cleanest Beach in Victoria’ and one of the most scenic parts of Balnarring Beach, is Cliff Road which is situated on a bushy headland. A walking track winds its way down the cliff face to the sandy beach below, offering spectacular views along the coast.
4. Merrick beach (35 Surf Street, Merricks)
Merricks Beach is a fairly narrow, steep strip of clean white sand over a more rocky tidal bay area. It lies on Western Port Bay and overlooks Phillip Island. The beach is buffered by a long area of bushland known as the Merricks Beach Bushland Reserve and the beach is fairly protected from the ocean swell.
